In Tux
Barbara Chapel
Located on the site of the former
magnesite mine on the Schrofenalm (1.700 m), the Barbara Chapel is a nicely
proportioned chapel erected in 1953 above Vorderlanersbach in honour of Saint
Barbara, the patron saint of the miners. The impressive wall fresco by the
entrance was painted by Max Weiler.
Peasant museum
Tyrol's highest (1.740 m) peasant museum
is at the Höllensteinhütte. The tools and working equipment (wooden plough
along with other tools) reveal the hard life of the mountain farmers in Tux.
The display includes complete ropemaking equipment and various minerals found
around the TUx alps. A one hour walk from Lanersbach. Admission to the museum
is free.
Mountain cheese dairy
The "Stoankasern" hut at an
altitude of 1.984 m is an attractive destination in a wild and romantic high
alpine valley, surrounded by pastures and slopes of alpine rose. The roughly 2
1/2 hour climb from Juns or Lanersbach is worth the effort. Every morning from
the mid of June to the mid of October you can see milk been worked into
butter and cheese. This mountain cheese dairy stores whole cheeses weighing
between 40 and 50 kg. And of course you can taste the fresh alpine butter and
cheese at the place of production, and enjoy a glass of buttermilk.
Mehlerhaus in Madseit
The Mehlerhaus was built in the
17th century, and has been restored by the District of Tux with the assistance
of the local population to create a cultural and a small museum. The farm was
lived in until 1992 and contains beautiful wooden Stuben and the kitchen that
once formed the focal point of peasant life. The Mehlerhaus is open every
Monday from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm - mid July to mid September.
Spannagel Cave
The entrance to an underground adventure
is located below the Spannagelhaus on the Hintertux Glacier: 10 kilometres
long, the cave by the Spannagelhaus is the most important cave in Tyrol and
presents above all an insight into the high alpine karstification of the
glacier regions. Discover stalagmites and stalactites, sinter formations,
crystals, ribbon marble etc. on the guided tours through the cave. Visit the
secret world underground! Guided tours all year round.
